Meet Pretty Gritty

Jeanette Villafane

A fearlessly authentic performer who transforms spaces by bridging spiritual depth with raw storytelling.

Jeanette Villafane brings grit and soul to amplify queer and Latinx narratives. This New York-born actor, director, producer, and spiritual catalyst’s relationship with storytelling began in the solitude of her Cuban household. Television wasn’t just escapism—it became her bridge to connection, her classroom for life, and her pathway to deeper conversations with her parents. That same young girl who called NBC daily from a payphone to save her favorite show has evolved into a powerhouse performer, infusing every role with raw authenticity and weaving her bilingual voice and cultural depth into each character.

From Artist Manager to Storyteller

For years, Jeanette uplifted others’ careers—co-founding the dance company La Santa Luz and managing musicians—before realizing her own voice demanded the spotlight. Stepping away from backstage roles, she immersed herself in acting classes, channeling her decade of artistic advocacy into roles that crack open silenced narratives.

Transformative Work Across Platforms

  • Netflix’s Tales of the City: A tough-as-nails lesbian construction worker balancing vulnerability with unshakable strength.

  • Hulu’s Your Attention Please: Berros: A complex Cuban horse rancher dismantling rural Latinx stereotypes.

  • Award-Winning Indie Empire Gypsy: A ruthless underboss radiating menace and magnetic humanity.

  • On Stage: Redefining queer narratives as the stone-cold yet heart-on-her-sleeve womanizer Rusty in TOSOS production of “Bar Dykes”,

  • Delivering comedic brilliance in “Dollywould”,

  • Winning hearts as the aloof ’80s rocker in Rock on the Line.

Legendary Dedication
Her commitment to craft is unmatched. After an endometriosis emergency, she left the ER with her hospital wristband still on, performed a monologue, and landed the representation that launched her career.

Jeanette’s creative journey is as dynamic as her spirit. Armed with a BA in Media Communications & Film from City College of New York, she has founded a NYC dance company, managed artists, earned a diversity scholarship at Upright Citizens Brigade, and trained at the Deena Levy Theatre Studio, where she later became an assistant acting coach.

Her work as a published poet and award-winning screenwriter continues to elevate voices and explore complex topics with honesty and NYC realism

Beyond the Spotlight

From swimming with sharks to collaborating with sacred healers at ancient global sites, Jeanette draws from extraordinary experiences to deepen her characters. A published spoken word poet and award-winning screenwriter, she’s committed to amplifying LGBTQ+ and Latinx voices through stories that ignite empathy and dialogue.
